Moving to Louisiana: Your Checklist for License, Registration, Inspection, Insurance and Voting

New to Louisiana? You have 30 days to transfer your driver's license and 30 days to register your car. Inspection stickers end for most personal vehicles on January 1, 2027, insurance minimums are $15,000/$30,000/$25,000, and voter registration closes 30 days before an election (20 online).

Moving to Louisiana means two 30-day clocks: one to transfer your driver’s license [1] and one to register your car [2]. Louisiana counts your residency for the car from the day you get your Louisiana license [2], so the license usually comes first. One rule is changing as you arrive: the familiar inspection sticker ends for most personal vehicles in 2027 [3].

1. Transfer your driver’s license within 30 days

The Office of Motor Vehicles says an out-of-state license must be transferred to Louisiana within 30 days of establishing domicile [1]. Bring originals or certified copies of [1]:

  • one primary identity document,
  • your Social Security number,
  • proof of Louisiana residency,
  • your photo license from your last state.

If your license is a valid, non-commercial license equivalent to Louisiana’s Class E or D, you won’t take any exam other than the vision test [1]. You’ll surrender your old license when the Louisiana one is issued [1].

2. Insure the car

Louisiana’s minimum liability coverage for a private passenger vehicle is [4]:

  • $15,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident,
  • $30,000 for injury or death of two or more people in one accident,
  • $25,000 for damage to other people’s property.

3. Register your car within 30 days

New residents must apply for a registration for each vehicle they own and drive on Louisiana roads within 30 days of establishing residency [2]. For this rule, residency begins on the day your Louisiana driver’s license is issued [2].

When you get your license, OMV must tell you that you have 30 days from that notice to pay any vehicle taxes due before penalties and interest start [6].

4. Inspection: the sticker is going away

Louisiana law has required a safety inspection certificate, and the new-resident statute still says your car needs one within 30 days [2]. But Act 701 of 2026 changes that [3]:

  • June 30, 2026 to January 1, 2027: officers can’t issue citations for failing to produce or display an inspection certificate.
  • From January 1, 2027: personal, noncommercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection certificate in most parishes. Commercial vehicles, larger covered farm vehicles and student transportation vehicles still get inspected.
  • A new sticker replaces it: vehicles registered in Louisiana will carry a Louisiana Vehicle Identification Program sticker, with a fee of no more than $6 a year.

5. Register to vote

Registrars close the rolls 30 days before an election. If that day is a legal holiday, they close on the next business day [5]. If you register online, the deadline is 20 days before the election [5].

Common questions

How long do I have to get a Louisiana driver's license after moving?

30 days after establishing domicile, according to the Office of Motor Vehicles. If you hold a valid non-commercial license from another state, you generally only take the vision test, and you surrender your old license.

Do I still need an inspection sticker in Louisiana?

Act 701 of 2026 ends the safety inspection sticker for personal, noncommercial vehicles. Police can't write tickets for a missing inspection certificate from June 30, 2026 to January 1, 2027, and the change takes effect January 1, 2027 in most parishes. Parishes in the federal emissions testing program keep emissions inspections.

When is the voter registration deadline in Louisiana?

30 days before an election for in-person and mail registration, and 20 days before for registering online.
